Rev. Prof. Fred Mawusi Amevenku, an ordained minister of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church Ghana. He is a passionate pastor of the church. He is currently the District Minister for the Kisseman District of the EP Church in Accra. He is a Senior Lecturer and Director of Graduate Studies  at Trinity Theological Seminary, Legon. He is also a Research Fellow at the Faculty of Theology at Stellenbosh University from where he obtained his PhD. With an impressive list of qualifications and a diverse range of responsibilities, Prof. Amevenku has made significant contributions to the study of the New Testament and biblical interpretation in the African context.

 

Born with a passion for education and faith, Prof. Amevenku embarked on his academic journey at the prestigious University of Cape Coast, where he pursued a Diploma in Mathematics Education and a Bachelor of Mathematics Education degree, with a cognate in Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Sports (HPERS). Equipped with a solid foundation in teaching, he continued his pursuit of knowledge and theological understanding at the Trinity Theological Seminary, earning the Bachelor of Divinity and Master of Theology degrees. Driven by an insatiable thirst for knowledge, Prof. Amevenku expanded his academic horizons further. He obtained a Master of Philosophy in African Studies from the Institute of African Studies, University of Ghana, delving deep into the realms of African religions and philosophy. Not one to rest on his laurels, Prof. Amevenku returned to the University of Ghana (UG). He went to the UG School of Law where he obtained an LLB degree. He subsequently enrolled in the prestigious Stellenbosch University in the Western Cape of South Africa, earning a Doctor of Philosophy degree in New Testament studies and biblical interpretation in Africa.

 

In Trinity Theological Seminary Prof. Amevenku wears several hats, as a multi-tasked personality in his distinguished career. He served as Faculty Secretary from 2011-1016, Special Assistant to the Academic Dean from 2012 to 2019 and as Director of Special Programmes from 2020-2022. He became the Director of Graduate Studies in 2021, a position he currently holds (2023). He has served as Ag Dean of Students for one academic year and as Denominational Warden for the EP Church from 2011-2022.

 

Prof Amevenku is a strong advocate for mother-tongue theologising. He imparts his extensive knowledge and expertise to students, offering courses such as Introduction to the New Testament, Pauline Studies, the Gospels, Mother Tongue Biblical Hermeneutics and New Testament Exegesis, Johannine Literature, New Testament Theology and Pneumatology in 1 Corinthians.

 

His commitment to education extends beyond the classroom, as he serves as a Hall Warden at Galevo Hall, fostering a supportive environment for students' growth and development of deep-rooted faith. He is dedicated to the ministerial and spiritual guidance of students. His multifaceted background allows him to bridge the gap between academia and religious practice, enriching his teachings with real-world insights and experiences.

 

An esteemed scholar, Prof. Amevenku has made significant contributions to the field of biblical studies, particularly in the areas of the Gospels, Pauline Studies and African Biblical Hermeneutics. His research and writings have shed new light on the interpretation of the Bible, exploring diverse perspectives such as biblical studies in the West African context, doing biblical interpretation and theologising in one’s mother tongue.

 

Throughout his career, Prof. Amevenku has demonstrated a tireless commitment to his students, his faith and the pursuit of knowledge. With his exceptional academic achievements and unwavering dedication to his craft, he continues to inspire and shape the minds of future theologians and ministers, leaving an indelible mark on the field of biblical studies. His additional research includes disability hermeneutics in Africa, the Bible and poverty in Africa, the Bible and migration, the Bible and the environment.
